Outside the Matrix is Practically Shaped., Toyota Motor Sales
The new Corolla Matrix XRS, the top-line model, is a fine car. Lower-line versions with more economical engines and softer suspensions also merit consideration.

Folks in North America prefer roomier cars than their Asian or European counterparts. On those continents Toyota’s Corolla is considered mid-size; in America it’s a compact. Realizing they need to accommodate the huge market segment which craves interior acreage yet demands relief from $4 gas Toyota’s introduced an all-new ’09 Matrix. Again based on the Corolla chassis the top-line Matrix XRS is eight inches shorter than its sibling but three inches wider, surprisingly offering more usable room. Best described as a Corolla wagon the Matrix is more practically shaped than its ancestor.

A Peek Inside the Matrix

The cloth front buckets are comfortable but the door armrests and between-seats console need more padding. The driver’s seat is height-adjustable and the passenger’s side folds flat. Legroom surrounding the 60/40 collapsible rear bench varies inversely with how far one pushes back the front buckets. The “trunk” is actually a hatch compartment and offers lots of room. Unless you order the CF Package for $199 – it includes a cargo mat and carpeted front and rear mats - the storage area’s floor is easy to clean plastic. Under the storage floor is a secret compartment, a nice touch. Outside liftover height is low.

Features and Safety for $23,250 Base

Overhead is a standard roof rack; the dash contains analog gauges. Cup holders and power points abound plus the glovebox is roomy. Other features of this 2,700 pound front-drive vehicle include dual front, side and head curtain airbags, four wheel disc brakes (antilock is extra), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution with Brake Assist, Vehicle Stability and Traction Control, a “direct-type” tire pressure monitoring system, advanced electric rack and pinion steering with a tilt/telescope wheel, power locks and mirrors, a burglar alarm, cruise control, keyfob entry and a more than adequate air conditioner and heater with dust and pollen filter will please.

Ride and Handling

Like near-identical cousin Corolla XRS the ride is aimed at handling enthusiasts. Street and road irregularities are negotiated with minimal jounce by the four-wheel independent suspension. The ride is also well suitable for families.

Handling was excellent and tossibility was enhanced by the standard Sport Strut Tower Brace. It aids this wagon’s maneuverability and contributes towards the 36.7-foot turning circle. Corners are negotiated with truly minimal lean, partly a function of decent P215/45R18 tires on standard 18” alloy wheels.

Under the Hood

The powerplant was an aluminum 2.4 liter, twin cam four valve per cylinder inline "four" with variable valve timing. Rated at 158 HP, the XRS’ 0-60 time was observed at 8.6 seconds using a Belkin accelerometer. The engine performed smoothly and quietly throughout the week-long test period. Fuel efficiency on regular unleaded was observed at 18 city and 27 highway (EPA 21/29). These numbers were recorded utilizing the standard five-speed automatic transmission, which shifted flawlessly. Towing capacity is 1,500 pounds.

The Sound System

The unit was a JBL AM/FM/CD/XM Satellite with six speakers and WMA/MP3 playback capability. Optional for $1,010, this Ford built bit of electronics worked well and offered better than average fidelity.

The Verdict

Overall the practically shaped XRS is a fine vehicle with a ride enthusiasts will love. Lower-line Matrix models use smaller engines and softer suspensions, making them yet another fine choice for many consumers.
